The discussions regarding micropollutants, which are substances that occur in very low concentrations (ng/l to μg/l) in water, first commenced in around 2000. These micropollutants are mostly not new, but their existence could only first be proven with the availability of steadily more effective analytical methodology. Owing to increasing industrialisation, population density and medication use, a growing number of micropollutants such as hormoneactive (endocrine) and pharmaceutical substances, chemicals and pesticides are entering our eco-systems. Above all, this takes place via wastewater disposal and can thus cause damage in this area. Municipal wastewater treatment plants are not the sole path of input for micropollutants, but certainly the main one.
While to date state of the art mechanical/biological treatment plants were focused mainly on the elimination of nutrients (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus), their barriers against organic micropollutants are insufficient. Proven technologies are already available that can be used to great effect in this area. These consist of oxidative, adsorptive and physical processes, and their combination. WABAG possesses expertise in all of these areas.
