The town of Klosterneuburg has also opted for the WABAG Hybrid Process

Vienna, September 23, 2011

The town of Klosterneuburg near Vienna has increased the capacity of its wastewater plant using an innovative process for
modern, fully biological treatment

The modified and enlarged wastewater treatment plant in Klosterneuburg was officially opened on September 14, 2011. The plant, which has a capacity of 55,000 p.e., has received a fully biological treatment phase, which employs the patented two-stage Hybrid Process, developed jointly by VA TECH WABAG and Prof. N. Matsché.

This innovative process is characterised primarily by:

  • A considerable reduction in the tank volume required and therefore a limited space requirement
  • A reduction in the energy needed for aeration
  • Increased biogas output from anaerobic sludge digestion
  • A low sludge volume index even when the wastewater composition is unfavourable
  • High levels of nitrogen elimination and flexibility

It is also especially suitable for projects involving increases in the capacity and cleaning performance of established plants, and
the integration of existing plant sections at favourable cost. The two-stage treatment process provides high-quality, cleaned wastewater even in the case of impact loads caused by commercial and industrial wastewater. In Klosterneuburg, the cleaned wastewater has near bathing water quality and can therefore be discharged into the Danube.

The Klosterneuburg wastewater plant is already the eleventh in Austria to have secured the advantages of the Hybrid Process. The largest application is the main wastewater treatment plant in Vienna, where the employment of a two-stage activated sludge process facilitates the optimum equalisation of impact loads, thus guaranteeing stable operation. For the enlargement of this major plant, which went on-stream in 2005, VA TECH WABAG provided the planning for an increase in capacity to 4 million p.e. using the Hybrid Process and also supplied fifteen, impressively dimensioned settling tanks.
