WABAG Switzerland: new moving bed and filtration system for the Männedorf wastewater treatment plant

Winterthur, September 2011

Extension using innovative WABAG FLUOPUR® and dual-layer filtration technologies.

In summer 2011, WABAG Water Technology Ltd. was awarded a contract for the extension of the biological treatment stage and the replacement of the existing sand filtration system. The customer was convinced by WABAG’s in-house developed technologies
and in future, the FLUOPUR® moving bed system will assure the biological treatment in the hybrid process with four lines. Moreover, the current wastewater filtration system is to be converted to use WABAG dual-layer filtration and while the building employed at present will be retained, the number of filters is to be doubled. This will not only ensure the required increase of plant treatment capacity to 18’000 PE, but also ensure considerably more flexible and safer operation.

The FLUOPUR® moving bed as a hybrid process
WABAG has selected the FLUOPUR® moving bed process in combination with activated sludge for the enlargement of the biological treatment stage. The use of the FLUOPUR®-biomass carrier material facilitates the economic extension of the existing plant within the existing biological tanks. In addition, the process also offers easy phosphorus elimination through simultaneous precipitation in the return sludge. In addition, the currently 2-line based biological stage will be converted into 4 lines in tanks with moving bed carrier, which will secure operational flexibility and safety.

Wastewater filtration with WABAG dual-layer filters
WABAG is to convert the existing Dynasand filtration into a dual-layer filtration. This modification is to take place inside the honeycomb building employed at present and therefore requires a special approach in order to achieve the gentlest possible renovation. The increase in the number of filters from three to six also means a marked increase in the levels of operational flexibility and safety in this stage of the plant.

The extension work of the wastewater plant is to commence this autumn and owing to the requirement for realisation in stages and statutory regulations regarding the construction phases will be completed in 2013.

This is not the first order received by WABAG Water Technology for Männedorf. In 2005, the company installed the very latest process technology in a new lake water treatment plant. A membrane filtration system with innovative backwash water recycling provides top quality drinking water in what is one of the most modern plants of its type in Switzerland.
