For Pure Water, Think WABAG!

Jeddah Airport 2 ISTP, KSA

As the first NEREDA® facility in the region, this plant sets a new benchmark for sustainable, cost-efficient wastewater management.

WABAG successfully executed the Jeddah Airport 2 Independent Sewage Treatment Plant (ISTP), a pivotal project addressing the wastewater treatment needs of Jeddah. The plant, designed to treat 300,000 m³/day of sewage, with the potential for expansion to 500,000 m³/day, marks a significant achievement in enhancing the city’s infrastructure. Furthermore, the used water treated with innovative NEREDA®-technology and disc filters as tertiary treatment achieves a high effluent quality to be reused as irrigational water through National Water Company’s TSE network.

The plant employs NEREDA® technology, a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment system that uses aerobic granular biomass for sustainable and cost-effective purification. This is the first plant in the region to implement this advanced technology, known for its compact design, energy efficiency, and lower operational costs compared to traditional systems.

Project Features:

  • Scope: WABAG was responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, supervision, commissioning, and demonstration of process guarantees for the ISTP, incorporating advanced process control instruments and equipment.
  • Technology:
    • Pre-treatment: fine screen, aerated grit chamber, buffer tank
    • Distribution chamber
    • Primary clarifier
    • Biological treatment – NEREDA® tanks
    • Disc filter
    • Disinfection (with ClO2)
    • The sludge produced during wastewater treatment is further processed in an anaerobic sludge treatment plant.
  • Impact: The plant provides efficient wastewater treatment to meet the growing demand in Jeddah, including the substantial volume generated by Jeddah Airport. It plays a critical role in ensuring environmental sustainability while addressing the city’s expanding needs. Furthermore, the project supports the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 by contributing to the reuse of treated wastewater through the use of eco-friendly technologies.
