Transforming Ganga: 187 MLD STP Projects boosts Cleanliness & Sustainability in Kolkata
The project involves the development of several sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the Bally, Baranagar, and Arupara regions of Kolkata, aimed at enhancing the cleanliness and ecological health of the Ganga River. In alignment with the Government of India’s Namami Gange program, the initiative addresses the urgent need for effective sewage management in urban areas, driven by significant pollution from rapid urbanization and industrialization.
Under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), the project entails the construction and renovation of multiple STPs with a total capacity of 187 MLD. The project not only focuses on building infrastructure but also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and public health.
The initiative is designed to ensure efficient sewage treatment, promoting a cleaner environment and improving the quality of life for millions living along the Ganga basin. By leveraging advanced treatment technologies and engaging in public-private partnerships, the project aims to restore the ecological balance of the Ganga River while supporting socio-economic development in the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority area.
Project Features:
- Scope: Construction, renovation, operation, and maintenance of several STPs as part of the Namami Gange program:
- Bally STP:
- Construct a new STP with a capacity of 40 MLD.
- Renovate an existing STP with a capacity of 22 MLD.
- Upgrade associated infrastructure.
- Arupara STP:
- Construct an STP with a capacity of 65 MLD.
- Establish a septage management facility with a capacity of 150 cum.
- Renovate associated infrastructure.
- Baranagar STP:
- Construct an STP with a capacity of 60 MLD.
- Renovate associated infrastructure.
- The project is implemented under a Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis.
- Treatment Process: The STPs will utilize modern sewage treatment technologies, including:
- Mechanical/Biological Treatment
- Tertiary Treatment
- Sludge Treatment
- Anaerobic digestion for sludge stabilization
- Biogas utilization for energy recover.
- Impact: The successful implementation of these STPs will lead to significant environmental restoration of the Ganga River by effectively treating sewage and reducing pollution. This will enhance public health, improve water quality, and support the socio-economic development of the region. Furthermore, the project is expected to contribute to sustainable urban development, benefiting millions of residents in the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority area.
