For Pure Water, Think WABAG!

Pagla WWTP, Bangladesh

A state-of-the-art wastewater and sludge treatment plant for enhancing water quality in the Buriganga river while reducing GHG emissions and promoting sustainability.

WABAG successfully forayed into Bangladesh with the award of a prestigious contract from Dhaka WASA for the Reconstruction, Expansion, and Operation of the Pagla Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Dhaka. The project, valued at approximately Rs. 800 Crores, is funded by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) under the Dhaka Sanitation Improvement Project (DSIP). This vital plant will treat 200 million litres of sewage per day, ensuring improved sanitation services for Dhaka’s growing population. The plant has been designed for future scalability, with the potential to expand up to 800,000 m3/d as the city’s needs evolve.

Project Features:

  • Scope: DBO: Design, Engineering, Supply, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning of the STP, followed by a 5-year Operation & Maintenance (O&M) period.
  • Technology: Activated Sludge Treatment Process with partial nitrification. Furthermore, the generated sludge will be anaerobically digested to produce biogas, which will then be used for power generation through gas engines, leading to a substantial reduction in the carbon footprint
  • Impact: The Pagla STP will play a critical role in addressing Dhaka’s sanitation challenges, meeting environmental norms, and mitigating global climate change through renewable energy production. The plant will improve the water quality of the Buriganga River while enhancing the livability index of the surrounding area.
