Upgrading the water treatment plant for the cooling water circuit enhances sustainable operation.
ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s., the largest steel producer in the Czech Republic and part of the world’s largest steel and mining group, has contracted WABAG to upgrade the water treatment plant at its steelworks in Ostrava as part of the “Steckel Mill Upgradation of Laminar Cooling” project. Six new sand filters and pumps for filtration, wastewater pumps, a chemical dosing station, and sludge treatment facilities have been installed to ensure a continuous supply of cooling water.
Scope: EPC: Complete delivery of mechanical and electrical equipment, as well as civil construction works, and the execution of the necessary administrative steps to obtain the building permit.
Technologies:
- Pumps to filtration (Q= 2,400 m3/h)
- Sand filtration: double-chamber sand pressure filters (6 nos) with a diameter of 4m
- Wastewater pumps
- Sludge treatment
- Chemical dosing station
Water recirculation: The filtered water is returned to the cooling water pit, where it is mixed with cooling water and then pumped back to the sand filters.
Impact: The upgraded water treatment plant enhances operational efficiency at ArcelorMittal Ostrava by ensuring a continuous and reliable supply of cooling water, reducing water wastage, and minimizing untreated wastewater discharge, which contributes to sustainable industrial practices and protects local water resources.
