Turnkey realization of the country’s largest WWTP, providing eco-friendly sanitation for 1.5 million people.
WABAG, leading the consortium “Entreprises Groupées,” successfully executed the turnkey realization of Oran’s new main wastewater treatment plant, one of Algeria’s largest. Located about 400 km east of Algiers, Oran is Algeria’s second-largest city. The plant was designed to handle both municipal wastewater and a small portion of industrial wastewater, addressing the city’s growing environmental needs. The project included mechanical pre-treatment, biological treatment, disinfection, and an anaerobic sludge digestion system.
Project Features:
- Scope: The plant was developed to accommodate a capacity of 270,100 m³/day, serving a population equivalent of 1,526,000. The DBO project was executed on a turnkey basis, followed by two years Operation & Maintenance (O&M).
- Treatment Process:
- Mechanical/Biological Treatment: Based on the activated sludge process, including aeration and secondary settling, followed by final disinfection using chlorine.
- Sludge Treatment: Gravity and mechanical thickening, anaerobic digestion in four bioreactors (9,600 m³ each), and dewatering.
- Impact: The plant is designed for potential water reuse and plays a significant role in the sustainable management of wastewater in Oran. Its comprehensive treatment process ensures the effective handling of large volumes of municipal and industrial wastewater, thus protecting the Mediterranean Sea.
