110 MLD Kodungaiyur STP: Pioneering 98% Energy Self-Sufficiency in Chennai.
The Kodungaiyur WWTP, located in northern Chennai, is an environmentally-friendly sewage treatment plant that handles 110 MLD of municipal wastewater. Utilizing the conventional activated sludge process, anaerobic sludge digestion, and biogas utilization for energy production, the plant achieves 98% energy self-sufficiency. Biogas generated from sludge digestion is used to power the plant, making it one of the most energy-efficient wastewater treatment facilities in Chennai.
Project Highlights:
- Scope: DBO: WABAG was responsible for the design, engineering, construction, commissioning, and operations & maintenance of the plant for 10 years, starting in 2006.
- Treatment Process:
- Mechanical pre-treatment
- Biological treatment using the conventional activated sludge process with secondary clarification.
- Sludge Treatment:
- Sludge thickening
- Anaerobic sludge digestion (2 digester each 6,075 m3),
- Gas Holder
- Biogas utilization: 1 MW Biogas Engine.Â
- Sludge dewatering by centrifuge incl. centrate treatment.
- Disinfection using a maturation pond
- Impact: The plant generates power from biogas, significantly reducing electricity imports from the state grid. With a biogas engine capacity of 1.3 MW, the plant produces electricity at a lower cost, contributing to its energy efficiency and sustainability. It also produces treated wastewater that meets stringent discharge standards, enhancing environmental protection.
- The Kodungaiyur WWTP serves as a model for sustainable urban wastewater management, producing green energy and reducing operational costs while protecting the environment.
