Upper Ruvu Drinking Water Treatment Plant, Tanzania

Delivering Clean Water to 700,000 People

The Upper Ruvu Drinking Water Treatment Plant in Tanzania is a landmark project enhancing water security for Dar es Salaam and its surrounding communities. Executed for the Dar es Salaam Water & Sewerage Authority (DAWASA), the project involved the rehabilitation and expansion of the raw water intake and transmission system at the Ruvu River, alongside the construction of a new high-capacity drinking water treatment plant facility. With a design output of 200,000 m³/day (200 MLD), the Water Treatment Plant delivers clean and safe drinking water to more than 700,000 residents. Funded by EXIM India, the project demonstrates the role of international collaboration and modern engineering in addressing critical water challenges in Africa.

Project Overview – Expanding Water Security in Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam, one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa, faces increasing pressure on its water resources. The Upper Ruvu Drinking Water Treatment Plant was developed to meet this demand by expanding capacity, improving efficiency, and ensuring continuous water supply. The project included rehabilitating existing intake systems, building a new treatment stream of 130,000 m³/day, and upgrading pumping and transmission facilities to distribute treated water to reservoirs in Kibamba and Kimara. Together, these efforts have strengthened the reliability of Dar es Salaam’s water network.

Scope:

  • Rehabilitation and expansion of the raw water intake and transmission system
  • Construction of a new treatment stream with 130,000 m³/day capacity
  • Treated water pumping and delivery to service reservoirs at Kibamba and Kimara

Technologies:

  • River Water Intake: Located 65 km from Dar es Salaam, equipped with screens, pre-lift pumps, grit channels, and pumping systems
  • Transmission Pipelines: Two mains conveying raw water across 6.3 km from the intake to the treatment plant
  • Treatment Units: Flow division, flocculation, coagulation, clarification, chlorination, and storage systems
  • Transmission System: Three pipelines ranging from 600 to 1200 mm diameter, conveying treated water 51 km to Kimara Reservoir

Engineering Impact and Community Benefits

  • Safe Drinking Water: This drinking water treatment plant ensures reliable supply of potable water for more than 700,000 people.
  • Urban Development: Supports Dar es Salaam’s rapid growth by strengthening infrastructure resilience.
  • Public Health: Improves hygiene and reduces the risk of waterborne diseases.
  • Sustainability: Upgraded intake, treatment, and pumping systems improve efficiency and operational reliability.

Strengthening Africa’s Water Future

The successful delivery of the Upper Ruvu Water Treatment Plant showcases how modern engineering and international funding partnerships can transform urban water infrastructure in Africa. By addressing water scarcity challenges and improving access, the project is a cornerstone of Tanzania’s water security strategy.

Upper Ruvu Drinking Water Treatment Plant – A Lifeline for Dar es Salaam

The Upper Ruvu Drinking Water Treatment Plant is more than a facility — it is a lifeline for Tanzania’s largest city. By combining rehabilitation, expansion, and modern technology, it ensures safe drinking water reaches hundreds of thousands daily while securing Dar es Salaam’s future water needs. This Water Treatment Plant sets a strong precedent for similar projects across Africa, demonstrating the power of sustainable infrastructure in driving social progress.
