Green Energy-Driven Sludge Treatment System at the 140 MLD Dinapur WWTP

The 140 MLD Dinapur Waste Water Treatment Plant in Varanasi stands as one of India’s most impactful municipal facilities integrating sludge-to-energy innovation. Designed and executed under a DBO model, this wastewater treatment project transforms organic sludge into renewable biogas, supporting green energy generation while strengthening urban sanitation under the Namami Gange Mission.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment with Integrated Sludge Digestion System

The Dinapur sewage treatment plant employs a comprehensive treatment train, including preliminary and biological processes followed by anaerobic sludge digestion. This sludge digestion system stabilizes organic matter and maximizes biogas generation, significantly reducing environmental burden while improving treatment efficiency at the wastewater treatment plant.

Sludge-to-Energy Infrastructure Supporting Sustainable Wastewater Treatment

At the core of the facility is a high-efficiency sludge digestion system comprising four anaerobic digesters, sludge thickening, dewatering units, and an advanced gas-handling setup. The biogas produced powers engines totaling over 2.4 MW electrical output, reducing reliance on external electricity and positioning the plant among India’s leading models for circular resource recovery.

Transformative Energy Recovery Advancing Clean Ganga Initiatives

As one of the flagship sludge treatment systems contributing to river rejuvenation, the Dinapur facility achieves substantial pollution load reduction and helps prevent untreated sewage discharge into the Ganga. Its sustainable design strengthens India’s progress toward clean-energy wastewater management, environmental protection, and climate-aligned urban development.

Comprehensive DBO Scope for the Dinapur Sludge Treatment System

The scope includes design, engineering, construction, supply, installation, commissioning, and a 10-year O&M tenure. This ensures seamless performance of the wastewater treatment and sludge digestion system while maintaining long-term operational reliability and efficiency.

Treatment Technology Enhancing Wastewater & Sludge Management

The treatment process covers:

  • Preliminary and mechanical treatment
  • Activated sludge biological treatment with secondary clarification
  • Sludge thickening and anaerobic digestion using four digesters (≈ 3,865 m³ each)
  • Biogas extraction, purification, storage, and utilization through advanced gas engines

These integrated systems elevate performance outcomes, ensuring stable, optimized processing within the wastewater treatment plant.

Biogas Utilization Through a High-Capacity Sludge Digestion System

The biogas handling system includes dual-membrane gas holders, biogas scrubbers, and three gas engines (828 kW each). This advanced sludge digestion system maximizes renewable power output while ensuring safe, reliable operation. Composting of dewatered sludge supports resource recovery and sustainable reuse.

Environmental Impact on Varanasi and the Ganga Basin

The Dinapur WWTP significantly reduces untreated sewage inflow to the Ganga, delivering cleaner water and healthier ecosystems. Its sludge-to-energy system cuts carbon emissions, lowers operational costs, and doubles wastewater treatment capacity in Varanasi—from 102 MLD to 242 MLD—supporting long-term urban and environmental resilience.

A Benchmark Among Sludge Treatment & Wastewater Treatment Companies

By integrating advanced sludge digestion systems with wastewater treatment excellence, this project reinforces WABAG’s leadership among global wastewater treatment companies. The Dinapur plant stands as a national model for sustainable sewage management and green energy generation.
