Produced Water – OMV Petrom, Romania

Client

OMV Petrom SA

Location

Suplacu de Barcau, Romania

Capacity

8,000 m³/day

An innovative treatment plant for Produced Water for Romania’s largest Oilfield.

WABAG has built a new produced water treatment plant at the Suplacu de Barcau oilfield for OMV Petrom SA, which is the largest in the country. Due to specific oil extraction processes the produced water contains large quantities of non-biodegradable organic com-pounds. Hence, an innovative process was tailor-made for the specific requirements of the oilfield. The design includes physical/chemical and biological process steps as well as advanced filtration and adsorption technologies, which represents a first in this specific field.

Project Features:

  • Scope: EPC turnkey execution including design and engineering, construction, equipment supply, installation, and commissioning.
  • Technologies:
    • An individual treatment process was designed comprising a.o:
    • Equalization,
    • Coagulation/Flocculation,
    • Dissolved air flotation (DAF),
    • Cooling towers (55°C down to 35 °C),
    • Biological treatment (activated sludge process),
    • Lamella clarifiers,
    • Flocculation,
    • Dual media filtration,
    • Activated carbon filtration for extended COD removal,
    • Sludge dewatering (2 phase centrifuge).
  • Impact: With an output of up to 1,000 t/d, Suplacu de Barcau is Romania’s largest oilfield. A key factor in its success is the treatment of produced water, which accompanies each barrel of oil at a ratio of 6 to 8 barrels. This produced water contains various organic and inorganic compounds. The Suplacu project aims to reduce pollutants in the water for environmentally-friendly discharge through an innovative three-stage process. This ensures a significant environmental impact by reducing pollution levels.
