For Pure Water, Think WABAG!

Recycling & ZLD Plant – NMDC Ltd, India

Client

NMDC Steel Limited, India

Location

Nagarnar, Jagdalpur, India

Capacity

4,320 m3/d

The Recycling & ZLD plant minimizes dependence on freshwater resources while reducing operating costs.
It is the largest Centralised ZLD plant of Steel Industry in India.

WABAG has successfully completed the construction and commissioning of a centralized Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Plant for the 3 MTPA steel plant of NMDC Steel Ltd. in Nagarnar. The 180 m³/h ZLD plant, which uses Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis, treats effluents from 15 different sources from steel production through an advanced multi-stage process including Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis, leaving behind high-quality water that is sustainably reused as make-up cooling water for closed water circuit. The remaining reject water from RO is further concentrated in a Multi Effect Evaporator, operating with an overall efficiency of 90% and followed by centrifuge.

Scope: Design, Build & Operate (5 years O&M): turnkey execution including design, construction, commissioning, and operation.

Technologies: An advanced multi-stage treatment process was designed comprising:

    • Pre-treatment: High-Rate Solid Contact Clarifier (HRSCC)
    • Multi Grade Filter (MGF)
    • Activated Carbon Filter (ACF)
    • UV Disinfection System
    • Ultrafiltration System
    • Reverse Osmosis
    • Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE)

Impact: The Centralized ZLD plant is a critical step in supporting the sustainability of the steel plant’s operations and reducing its impact on the environment. Furthermore, the NMDC steel plant can significantly reduce its dependence on freshwater resources and minimize the amount of wastewater it generates.
