Developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), the initiative aims to improve sewage management, reduce pollution, and restore the ecological balance of the Ganga River in line with the Government of India’s Namami Gange mission.

This multi-location municipal wastewater treatment plant programme covers the construction of new sewage treatment facilities and the rehabilitation of existing ones. With a combined treatment capacity of 187,000 m³/day, the programme strengthens the wastewater infrastructure serving millions of residents in the Kolkata metropolitan area. These plants ensure reliable sewage treatment while addressing the increased load resulting from rapid urbanisation and industrial growth.
Waste Water Treatment Plant Deploying Advanced Biological, Tertiary & Sludge Management Systems
The project incorporates modern sewage treatment plant technologies, including advanced mechanical and biological treatment, tertiary clarification systems, anaerobic digestion, and biogas-based energy recovery. This technological integration ensures effective removal of pollutants, improved effluent quality, and sustainable sludge utilisation—aligning with national environmental standards.

Treatment Technology for High-Efficiency Municipal Wastewater Management
Each municipal wastewater treatment plant uses a combination of mechanical pre-treatment, biological treatment, tertiary treatment, and disinfection. These processes ensure high-quality effluent suitable for safe discharge, supporting environmental restoration goals.
Sludge Management & Biogas Recovery Supporting Circular Operations
Arupara and Baranagar facilities include anaerobic sludge digestion units which generate biogas for energy use. This circular approach reduces greenhouse gas emissions and lowers operational energy demand, making the waste water treatment plant system more sustainable.
