WABAG executed a comprehensive turnkey sludge treatment facility for the Xiaohongmen Wastewater Treatment Plant, one of China’s largest municipal WWTPs. Designed to handle sludge from a 600,000 m³/d plant, the facility features advanced anaerobic digestion technology integrated with energy recovery systems. The project, co-financed by the World Bank, stands as a benchmark in sustainable sludge stabilization, biogas recovery, and operational excellence.
Project Highlights:
- Scope: Complete design, engineering, equipment supply, construction, installation, and commissioning, including training of the local team.
- Treatment Process:
- Sludge storage and mechanical thickening
- Anaerobic sludge digestion in five 12,000 m³ digesters
- Biogas production of 30,000 m³/d used for 67,000 kWh/day energy generation
- Biogas treatment and storage systems, air blowers, sludge dewatering, and phosphorus removal
- Impact:
WABAG’s solution transformed sludge into stabilized biosolids, supporting safe disposal and energy self-sufficiency. With 2.1 MW installed power generation and impressive energy recovery, the facility sets an industry benchmark for integrating circular economy principles in urban water infrastructure. The digesters, now prominent technical landmarks in Beijing, highlight the city’s commitment to climate-conscious wastewater management.
