WABAG expands its global footprint with a new large-scale seawater desalination order from Senegal

WABAG expands Global footprint with a new JICA funded, consortium order for 50 MLD Desalination project in Senegal, worth about 146 Million Euro

WABAG further enhanced its global position in the Desalination market, by securing a consortium Design, Build, Operate (‘DBO’) order, for the 50 MLD (expandable to 100 MLD) Mamelles Sea Water Desalination Project from Société Nationale Des Eaux du Sénégal (‘SONES’), the National Water Company of Senegal, worth about 146 Million Euro.

The scope of WABAG under this order will be Engineering & Procurement (‘EP’) and Operation & Maintenance (‘O&M’), which is worth about one-third of the consortium order value. WABAG’s EP scope includes Design, Engineering and Supply of Electromechanical equipment, supervision of Installation and Commissioning followed by a 2 year O&M of the plant. The location of the plant is in the main corniche of Dakar city on a high hill top, with sea water intake from the Atlantic Ocean. The plant will be based on SWRO technology with very advanced compact systems, considering the availability of land and challenging terrain.

The project is to be executed by WABAG in consortium with Toyota Tsusho Corporation (‘Toyota’), Japan and Eiffage Génie Civil, France (‘Eiffage’). WABAG will play the role of the Technology & System integrator, while Eiffage will be responsible for the construction work and Toyota will co-manage the project.

President of the Republic of Senegal interacting with the consortium representatives, during the ground breaking ceremony

This project which is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (‘JICA’) aims to provide a safe and stable water supply to the people of Senegal by ensuring a highly sustainable water source. The groundbreaking ceremony of this project was held in Dakar, Senegal and the commencement of construction of the plant was declared by the President of Senegal. As the first large-scale seawater desalination plant in Senegal and the largest in West Africa upon completion, this project is expected to greatly improve the lives of the people by meeting the water needs of about one million Dakar residents, thereby contributing to sustainable development of the economy in Senegal.

This breakthrough order in the West African region, marks the entry of WABAG into a new geography, Senegal. WABAG is already executing 50 MLD (expandable to 100 MLD) Desalination project in Tunisia, North Africa being funded by KfW Germany. WABAG has been continuously foraying into new Geographies and Senegal is yet another country, where our consistent marketing efforts have reaped benefits. This significant order is a testament to WABAG’s strong track record, knowhow & global competitiveness in desalination and WABAG’s continued contribution to water security in the African continent. This plant when completed, will play a significant role in meeting the water demand of Senegal and also be an important reference project for WABAG.”

WABAG signs concession agreement for 40 MLD TTRO plant in Ghaziabad, India

WABAG signs concession agreement for 40 MLD TTRO plant in Ghaziabad, India

WABAG through its wholly owned subsidiary M/s. Ghaziabad Water Solutions Private Limited (SPV), signed a concession agreement with Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN) towards Design, Build, Finance and Operation of a new 40 MLD Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant along with associated infrastructure under Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). WABAG will be the technical partner of the project and will execute the Design-Build-Operate (DBO) contract with SPV worth Rs. 594 crores.

The project scope includes a 2 years construction period followed by a long-term operation and maintenance period of 15 years. This project would receive a grant during the construction period from GNN, which has raised money through India’s first municipal Green Bond.

The scope of works under this concession contract includes Design, Construction, Supply, Installation, Testing, Trial Run and Commissioning followed by Operation & Maintenance for 15 years, of a new 40 MLD TTRO plant. The plant will use membrane technology with Ultra filtration followed by Reverse Osmosis to further purify the treated sewage water to industrial usage quality. In addition, WABAG will also perform renovation & refurbishment of the upstream 56 MLD STP plant, followed by its Operations & Maintenance thereafter.

The 40 MLD TTRO plant once commissioned shall be the largest TTRO plant under HAM in India and expected to provide sustainable solutions for the water needs of the industries located in Sahibabad Industrial Estate, Ghaziabad. In terms of environmental impact, this will be a pioneering project in the Ghaziabad area, since industries here will now be mandated to use TTRO-treated water, instead of the presently used groundwater, which is already depleting fast. It is worth noting that WABAG has on Design, Build Operate (‘DBO’) basis already built, commissioned and is currently operating a state-of-the-art 45 MLD TTRO plant in Koyambedu, Chennai for CMWSSB which is supplying treated water from the said plant to SIPCOT industrial estate in Chennai.

Commenting on this major order, Mr. S. Varadarajan, Director and Chief Growth Officer said, “Wabag has been at the forefront of the Water Recycle & Reuse initiative in India. Several states in India have already come up with Reuse policies aiming at recycling 70% of Treated Waste Water by 2025 & 100% of Treated Waste Water by 2030. This order is yet another milestone for WABAG towards contributing to sustainable water solutions to industries in Ghaziabad through advanced technologies for reuse of water. We thank GNN for the confidence and trust reposed in WABAG for this prestigious project.”
