Koyambedu TTRO – Producing potable quality water which is tested and trusted

Koyambedu TTRO – Producing potable quality water which is tested and trusted

Water is becoming increasingly scarce with ever increasing population and rapid urbanization. Globally, there is an urgent need to look beyond the dwindling traditional sources of water supply and encourage sustainable as well as dependable alternative sources of water to meet the demand. Reuse of treated municipal wastewater is one such option which has been established as economically viable and considerably inexpensive compared to other alternatives.

In 2001, WABAG built the World’s first direct potable reuse (DPR) plant in Windhoek, Namibia based on water reuse concept with a capacity of producing 21,000 m3 clean drinking water every day. Similarly, in 2003, Singapore introduced high-grade reclaimed water, known as NEWater, for both direct non-potable use and indirect potable use, recycling treated sewage.

In 2019, WABAG built a world-class water reuse plant 45,000 m3/day capacity at Koyambedu, Chennai for CMWSSB (Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board) on DBO basis under Government of India’s flagship AMRUT program. The successful execution of the landmark project in 2019 emerged as a perineal source of alternative water, marking a milestone in making Chennai water resilient.
