ADB-Funded Project to Enhance Water Quality and Ecosystem Health in Kathmandu Valley

VA TECH WABAG LIMITED, has secured a significant order from Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) in Nepal. This repeat order, valued at approximately USD 49 million, is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and involves the design, build, and operation (DBO) of three wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in Sallaghari, Kodku, and Dhobighat.

The project, expected to be completed over 24 months, will be followed by a five-year operation and maintenance (O&M) phase. These plants will collectively treat 69 MLD of wastewater, significantly reducing the discharge of untreated wastewater into the Bagmati, Manohara, and Hanumante rivers. This initiative aims to restore water quality and improve the overall ecosystem in the region.

WABAG’s proven track record with KUKL and a technically superior bid were key factors in securing this order amidst strong international competition, further strengthening our leadership in the South Asian region.

In addition to treating wastewater, the plants will generate green fuel (biogas) through activated sludge treatment. This green energy will be used to power the WWTPs, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and optimizing operational costs.

Reflecting on this important achievement, WABAG stated, “We are extremely happy to have been entrusted with this pivotal project. This repeat order is a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence, sustainability, and the trust that our customer has placed in our technical and execution expertise. This order further strengthens WABAG’s foothold in Nepal and the South Asian region.”
